Powertrain & Drivetrain – What’s the Difference

BRAND drivetrain and powertrain

What are powertrain and drivetrain? In brief, the drivetrain is what delivers the power to move the wheels and the powertrain includes the motor and the drivetrain.

Drivetrain or Powertrain

You might not know off the top of your head what the benefits are of comparing a drivetrain vs. powertrain yet when you recognize the differences between the two, it will certainly provide you the edge when car shopping, going to the mechanic, or when Alex Trebek asks you a Jeopardy question concerning car elements that make cars move.

Simply put, powertrains and drivetrains basically do the exact same thing. They generate kinetic energy to make your car or truck ‘go’. Now, chances are that you’ve never actually thought of how vital these moving parts are. They’re the unsung heroes that get you from point A to point B and they each work in their own special way.

Parts of the Drivetrain: What are they?

Many times the terms ‘drivetrain’ and ‘powertrain’ are used interchangeably but, contrary to popular belief, they are not the same. So exactly what is the difference between powertrain elements and drivetrain parts? The biggest distinction is the way power is created and dispersed to the vehicle.

A drivetrain is not actually a solitary part of your car – it’s a team of drivetrain parts that interact with the engine to move the wheels and different parts of the car to thrust it into motion. These parts usually include the transmission, differential, driveshaft, axles, CV joints, and the wheels.

Drivetrain: How Does it work?

This is the order of how power is produced and delivered by a drivetrain:

  • The engine will produce power to power a flywheel
  • That flywheel works with the transmission to regulate the quantity of power distributed to various other parts of the drivetrain
  • The driveshaft rotates to create power to a differential
  • The differential then supplies power from all those driveshaft components and boom … your wheels are moving

What is in A Powertrain?

If you mastered the drivetrain basics, the powertrain basics should be a simple idea to comprehend, due to the fact that there is just one defining variable that sets them apart. That variable is the engine. In a powertrain, the engine is a part of the many moving parts. If you keep in mind from the paragraph above, the drivetrain works with the engine.

The powertrain includes every moving component that is vital to the automobile’s success. Its single objective is converting kinetic energy into propulsion movement. If one of these components fail your automobile may experience some uncommon rattling, or shaking.

Wondering why the service technician is never the same person? Last 3 times I’ve been there it’s a different person each time. Thank you for looking into this.
